Is investing in options worthwhile for individual investors?
The answer is no. Unless you are a professional investor and fully aware of what you are doing, we recommend not investing in options. Options are generally used to structure more complex investment strategies than just buying or selling a stock. If you wanted to protect yourself from the downside risk of a stock that you already have in your portfolio at the current price of R$ 100, you could buy a put option on this stock at R$ 80. Thus, if the price of your shares fell to R$50, you could still exercise your options and sell them at R$ 80, regardless of the current market price. And pure investments in options are also not worth it, as they are extremely volatile assets. The price of an option can double or drop to zero in a matter of hours. Furthermore, the value of an option has two components: the first is the difference between the current stock price and the option strike price. The second is relative to the time remaining until the exercise date, which decreases as time passes, so an option is more likely to go down than up in the future. If the temptation to make quick and easy money is irresistible to you, buy a mega sena ticket. So you kill the will to have a chance to earn easy money and only lose R$ 4.50.
