Overview of the Brazilian supermarket sector
In 2023, the supermarket sector in Brazil reached total revenue of R$ 1 trillion, operating through various distribution modalities and channels. This amount represented more than 9% of the country's GDP and provided employment, directly or indirectly, to more than 9 million people.
In the sector, despite the presence of more than 300 thousand active companies, there is a notable market concentration. Around 22% of total revenue is dominated by the three main conglomerates in the sector — Carrefour, Assaí and Grupo Mateus — which, together, accumulated revenue in excess of R$ 218 billion in 2023.
In parallel, the geographic distribution of the sector also shows significant concentration. The Southeast region is responsible for more than 50% of the supermarket sector's total revenue, with the state of São Paulo alone representing 33% of the national total.
